An Awesome Update, a Writing Conference, Stargate SG-1 Articles, and News on Building Bad Guys
Or, some scribblings about all that I’ve been up to
Hello again Fellow Adventurer,
Good grief but October and the first part of November simply flew by faster than I could keep track of!
While my writing in some areas had to be placed on the back burner for a bit (noooooooo), I did do a lot of other writing, including a long read for a website that I’m thrilled to be a part of. The link is below, but let’s just say that I never thought my love for Stargate SG-1 will give me the chance to write like that! Mwahahaha!
I have also learned the joys of using mechanical keyboards. My life will never be the same. Anyway…
ROSACon 2021!
Thanks to a confluence of factors, I gave a presentation on literary translation at ROSACon 2021 – The Romance Writers Organisation of South Africa – on 14 November! I also led a panel on romance in (Afrikaans) fantasy on the 13th. (Don’t worry, I wasn’t all “I find it best to just kill one or both of the characters”!
An article about Stargate SG-1 and grief – but not grief over Stargate SG-1
I’m thrilled to have a creative non-fiction article on one of the Stargate SG-1 episodes published by The Companion. (If you don’t know about the site, be sure to check it out!)
Called “What ‘The Gamekeeper’ Taught Me About Grief and Acceptance”, it’s a long read that I hope you’ll enjoy.
I also have another article that I’m writing for them that’s much less depressing and contains a lot more mythology. Researching the article has been so much fun, but I have gotten lost in a rabbit hole once or twice. I don’t know what the final title of the piece will be, but I’ll announce it as soon as it’s up on the site.
Making the bad guys in Ruon Chronicles even worse
I’m busy crafting some more “bad guys” for The Ruon Chronicles. Well, more like building them up from the vague ideas I have for later in the series. Putting names and faces to the antagonists is in some ways more difficult than building the main characters. Sometimes I wonder how dark the stories will go in the end. But then, having Happy People from Happy Valley all the time is barely a story now is it?
I’m using Sacha Black’s book 13 Steps To Evil - How To Craft A Superbad Villain (not an affiliate link and I bought the books myself) for some help in making the antagonists more than just 2D cut-outs that are just evil because I need a couple of baddies in the story.
The book is actually more helpful than I thought it would be and is really making me think about all the motivations, etc. that needs to be built into the story – yay!
Along with this I’m really breaking down the use of the bloodstones and how they’re made, etc. as this already plays a huge part in the first book.
Let the epic epicness begin! (And let me finish the complete outline now, for goodness’ sake…)
Some final (awesome) news before I sign off
So, this just happened in the last week, actually – I’ll be moving to a different flat early next year! Huzzah! And I even get to choose the paint colours for the new place although I’ll be renting. Methinks it’s Pinterest inspiration time…
I cannot wait to start packing (but first need to get a hold of boxes) and will probably pack up my books first. Because, wow, I’m going to need a lot of boxes for those. Plus, I don’t want to pack everything on one day and exacerbate by bad knee to the point that I’m broken for a week after moving. That will not be ideal, especially since there’ll be stairs involved.
But, anyway, I’ll try and get some sturdy boxes from the local bookshops and then slowly but surely get started on packing and labeling everything. And measuring stuff to see where they’ll go. Because lots of bookshelves, basically.
With that I say farewell until next time when I’ll hopefully have news about the new Stargate piece and will have some more info on the bloodstones in Ruon Chronicles.
Stay safe and well!
Love,
Carin
